Jonathan Holloway has an impressive track record as an artistic director, both in the UK and Australia, where his four years directing the Perth International Arts Festival are often prefaced with the words ‘highly successful’.

But the new Artistic Director ​of Melbourne Festival has some counter-intuitive advice for others ​developing a career in the arts. He speaks about success as one possible outcome rather than a goal. Success may be the result at the end of your work, but it should not be what you are looking for as you travel through the process of creation or curation.
