Perhaps the most isolated city in the world, Perth is a sprawling mass of suburbia, defined in part by its distance from the eastern states but also, increasingly, by the dividends of the resources boom.

Both phenomena have flowed through to the cultural sector, driving creative self-starting and investment in the arts.
