Opportunity knocks for women directors

Thirteen women will have the opportunity to pitch for a main stage chance when they complete a landmark program at the MTC.

The Melbourne Theatre Company’s new Women Directors Program is the first time a major theatre company has run a training program specifically aimed at developing a group of women directors.

But it is unlikely to be the last. The Queensland Theatre Company is already looking at running a similar program. Both companies are aware of the shortage of women directing main stage productions in major Australian theatres, a problem highlighted last year by the Australia Council in its report on Women in Theatre.
