Constructed between 1967 and 1973 as part of the building’s second stage of development, the soaring sails of Sydney Opera House are not only distinctive and world famous; they’re also one of the foremost examples of the use of concrete in 20th century architecture. But concrete degrades – especially through exposure to seawater – and the one million white tiles affixed to the surface of the concrete must also be regularly tested for degradation.
