Knock, knock preserves a global icon

A state of the art smart-hammer has been developed to safeguard the tile-covered concrete sails of the World Heritage-listed Sydney Opera House.

Constructed between 1967 and 1973 as part of the building’s second stage of development, the soaring sails of Sydney Opera House are not only distinctive and world famous; they’re also one of the foremost examples of the use of concrete in 20th century architecture. But concrete degrades – especially through exposure to seawater – and the one million white tiles affixed to the surface of the concrete must also be regularly tested for degradation.
