Vale Richard Divall

The Australian conductor, composer and musicologist died on Sunday aged 71, following a long battle with cancer.

Remembered as a loyal and generous friend and a great musical talent, Professor Richard Divall​, AO, OBE has died aged 71.

Born in Sydney in 1945 and a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Divall was an expert in Maltese sacred music and early Australian music.

He served as the Music Director of Victoria State Opera from 1972 until 1996, when it merged with Opera Australia, at which point he became Opera Australia’s principal resident conductor, a role he held until 2001.
