2017 Young Composers Award winner announced

Willoughby City Council and Fine Music 102.5 are pleased to announce Ella Macens as the winner of the 2017 Young Composer Award for her work, FLIGHT. Sydney based Ella is a fast-emerging young composer currently studying a Master of Music in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

“As the music unfolded, my mind became hooked on visualising the act of flying in all its forms - I imagined birds flying in our skies,” said Ella. “To explore these perspectives, the piece morphs from boisterous and bold rhythmic motifs to more melancholic, soaring passages, as well as representing both the micro and macro perspectives of what these creatures see from above, diving in and out of lakes and forests and soaring high over mountain peaks,” she said.

An annual competition, the Young Composer’s Award provides composers under the age of 30 with the opportunity to have their work premiered live on stage by the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and a recording of the performance for future broadcast on Fine Music 102.5.

Fine Music 102.5 gratefully acknowledges APRA|AMCOS for its support of this competition allowing opportunities for emerging composers entering the Australian music community.

FLIGHT will be performed by the Willoughby Symphony on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September as part of the NATURE concert at The Concourse, Chatswood. To book your tickets, please phone 8075 8111 or visit
