Don’t pass up The Forwards this June at the Powerhouse, a raw physical theatre experience about footy, friendship and reckless behaviour
A tragicomedy about footy, friendship, sporting culture and small town rivalries will blur the line between actor and audience during The Forwards season at the Brisbane Powerhouse this June.
Following a series of successful shows on the Gold Coast as part of Bleach* Festival in April, The Forwards is coming to Brisbane by popular demand for eight shows at the Visy Theatre from 14 to 24 June. No strangers to the Brisbane Powerhouse, Shock Therapy Productions is returning to the Visy Theatre after their Matilda award-winning season of The Pillowman in 2015.
Written by Stefo Nantsou, director and founder of internationally renowned Zeal Theatre, and performed by multi-award winning company Shock Therapy Productions, The Forwards follows the story of a small town called Pintoon where nothing ever happens – except the footy.
The town is buzzing as the local team, the Pintoon Parrots, finally make it to the Grand Final under the steam of their three star forwards - Rabbit, Hoges and Tractor. In the lead up to the game, the entire town unites to party hard and celebrate, but tensions boil over in the build up to the big game.
The dream team of goal kickers is challenged by a vicious cocktail of grog and jealousy as mateship gives way to anger and violence, leading to some devastating repercussions.
The Forwards is a unique style of theatre, explains Director Stefo Nantsou, featuring multi-skilled performers who bring to life a range of characters in a very physical performance.
“The Forwards is lifted by its theatricality - it's not a bunch of characters sitting around talking about their problems. It's people doing what they do - kicking a ball, dancing to a band down the pub, going to parties, being in dangerous situations, holding secrets, cheating, gambling, raising hopes and disappointing loved ones,” said Nantsou.
A live musical score, performed by two onstage musicians along with the three actors, complements the high-octane physical action on stage.
The Forwards is a superb example of Zeal Theatre and Shock Therapy’s signature style of theatre, utilising physical theatre, live music and multiple characters. Shock Therapy Productions has won four Matilda awards including Best Independent Production in 2015 and 2016, and internationally renowned Zeal Theatre has staged more than 45 original productions in over 30 countries.
A season of The Forwards was presented at The Arts Centre Gold Coast in July 2015 and received rave reviews. Since 2015, a scaled-back version of the show has toured to several schools throughout South East Queensland and is currently part of Shock Therapy Productions 2017 schools touring program.
“The hard-hitting physical performance delves into the pressures facing young sportspeople, a culture of binge drinking, racing cars and small town rivalries and promises to have you spellbound from beginning to end.” – Jade Quinlivan (The Weekend Edition)
Don’t get sidelined this June, tickets are on sale now for The Forwards, presented by Brisbane Powerhouse, Shock Therapy Productions and Zeal Theatre.
