Shir Madness - Melbourne Jewish Music Festival

SHIR MADNESS returns to Melbourne to celebrate the Jewish contribution to music with 10 hours of joyous, riveting, moving & challenging performances of every imaginable kind. 30 acts will play on multiple, concurrent stages and a single ticket covers all acts all day.  With the iconic festival alternating annually with Sydney, it’s Melbourne’s turn to celebrate in 2017!

Headlining the festival are the incomparable New York trail blazers The Klezmatics – unquestionably the most famous exponents of the wild Jewish dance music klezmer. Also performing in Australia for the first time is world-renowned US clarinet virtuoso David Krakauer and his band Ancestral Groove with their blend of contemporary rap, jazz & hip hop filtered through ancient Jewish traditions. ‘Australia's First Lady of Soul’ Renée Geyer brings her unique vocal power to this extraordinary line-up.

Shir Madness is also thrilled to announce: Deborah Conway & Willy Zygier, performing their latest 5-star album Everybody’s BeggingTinpan Orange, purveyors of gorgeous song; the Grigoryan Brothers, classical guitar virtuosos; the Stiletto Sisters with their riotous take on Eastern European music; Australian favourites Klezmania putting their own joyous spin on klezmer; Alter Jazz Ensemble, mixing the religious and the modern; YID! the new Jewish supergroup big band; Tal Cohen, phenomenal Israeli-born US-based jazz pianist; Temple of Song, a participatory spiritual experience; Sonya Lifschitz, contemporary classical pianist premièring new work; Annie Lee from theKransky Sisters with a Jewish Weimar cabaret; Jazz powerhouse Fem Belling; and Alma Mater playing moody & fiery Portuguese Fado.

Plus Song of Songs is returning, featuring the cream of Australia’s musical community singing one of their favourite songs by a Jewish composer.
Festival Director Deborah Conway said: “Willy Zygier, Artistic Director, and I are excited to be at the helm once again of this wonderful day that celebrates community and diversity with incredible music. What a brilliant way to spend Father’s Day. Bring your kids! Better still, let your kids bring you!”
