Tea with Jam and Clare with Yassmin Abdul-Magied

Join Jamila Rizvi and Clare Bowditch for an afternoon of honest conversation and song, exploring themes of identity, belonging and the people and places that make us feel like home. This is the third instalment of Tea with Jam and Clare and the girls will be joined by a woman who is briefly returning home, special guest writer, activist and engineer Yassmin Abdul-Magied.

Born in Sudan, Yassmin migrated to Australia as a child and recently relocated to the United Kingdom following a hugely tumultuous period in the media spotlight where her Australian identity was repeatedly called into question. Yassmin is a brilliant speaker whose insights into culture, colour and what it is to be a ‘good migrant’ will expand your mind and open your heart.

Clare, Jamila and Yassmin each promise to bring the best of themselves for this thoughtful and theatrical event. There will be personal and political truths laid bare, difficult questions posed and emotional anguish answered – and there will be songs to remind us who we are as a nation and perhaps most importantly, who we are not.

Tea with Jam and Clare will be at the Thornbury Theatre on Sunday 22nd July, where the seats will be cosy, the tea will be sweet and the room warm and welcoming.

Tea with Jam and Clare will begin with a provocation from Jamila Rizvi, where she will speak about the concept of belonging and how we separate ourselves from ‘others’ to help define who we are as individuals. Next, Jamila will be joined by co-host Clare Bowditch to interview the bold and brilliant Yassmin Abdul-Magied in a joyous homecoming for our returning warrior. Finally, Clare will lead the room in an uplifting group singing adventure especially designed for people who – when they think of singing in public – do a little wee in their pants. This event will leave you feeling even better than when you walked in.
