ANAM 2017 Opening Concert: Enigma

Saturday 4 March 7pm

The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is out of the blocks with their 2017 Opening Concert – four great orchestral works by four major English composers. Britten’s impassioned cry from the heart juxtaposes powerfully with Vaughan Williams’ and Ades’ fantasies on the music of two earlier masters (Tallis and Couperin) and Elgar’s ever-popular Enigma variations. Leading the ANAM Orchestra is Principal Conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Nicholas Carter. Carter is the youngest conductor – and only the fourth Australian ever – to be appointed Principal Conductor of a major Australian orchestra so is the perfect match to ANAM's young, professional musicians.

ADES Three Studies from Couperin
BRITTEN Sinfonia da Requiem
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis
ELGAR Variations on an Original Theme op. 36 Enigma

Nicholas Carter conductor
ANAM Orchestra

"I was keen to do the Enigma Variations at ANAM, and the rest of the program followed from that. The Enigma has an air of reflection or looking back; appraising friendships and personalities from Elgar's life." (Nicholas Carter)
