To mark the start of the 2017 university year and welcome this year’s international students, Arts Centre Melbourne and the City of Melbourne will be hosting Asia Pop Fest on Friday 24 March as part of the Asia TOPA festival.
Celebrating all things Asian pop culture, with SBS PopAsia as an official media partner, Asia Pop Fest invites local and international students to welcome the start of the university year with an unforgettable evening in Melbourne’s favourite outdoor music venue, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.
Free for students, Asia Pop Fest celebrates all aspects of pop culture. From 5 – 7pm, the Bowl will host a range of activities for attendees: K-Pop dance competitions, a gaming lounge, food trucks, a Melbourne information zone for those new to the city, an acoustic stage and the annual City of Melbourne’s official Lord Mayor’s Student Welcome.
From 7pm onwards, Asia Pop Fest will feature a stellar line-up of music superstars, including Korean popstar Ailee, who has captivated the K-pop industry with her vocal talent and relatable lyrics, and Singaporean singer Nathan Hartono, who impressively came runner up in the 2016 series of Sing! China.
There will also be a special guest appearance by virtual Japanese pop star IA (who rose to fame as an avatar from the voice synthesizer software Vocaloid) and more international acts to be announced shortly. After the fun has wrapped up at the Bowl, there will be an official after party hosted by TANG, with a special appearance by Nathan Hartono.
A welcome event for international students of this size and scope is unprecedented in Australia. Asia Pop Fest is an experience for all of Melbourne to enjoy – from local and international students, to K-Pop die-hards and the pop-curious.
