Heathers - The Musical

The Original Mean Girls come to WAAPA

The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts presents the WA premiere of the deliciously dark contemporary musical, Heathers from Saturday 18 until Saturday 25 March in the Geoff Gibbs Theatre at Edith Cowan University’s Mount Lawley campus.

Hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal! Brainy, beautiful teenage misfit Veronica Sawyer hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. But before she can get comfortable atop the high- school food chain, Veronica falls in love with the dangerously sexy new kid, JD. When Heather Chandler, the Almighty, kicks her out of the group, Veronica decides to kiss Heather’s aerobicized butt… but JD has other plans.

Based on the greatest teen comedy of all time and brought to you by the award-winning creative team of Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, “Desperate Housewives”), Laurence O’Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde) and Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness, She’s the Man), Heathers The Musical is a hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal new show that WAAPA’s acclaimed Music Theatre students cannot wait to present to WA audiences.

Director and Associate Dean of WAAPA, Andrew Lewis, has been a fan of the source material for a long time, "I first saw the feature film Heathers in the 80’s when I was at Drama School. It was a black satire on life in an American high school starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. The theatre reworking, which played off Broadway in 2014 manages to improve on the original narrative and provides a hilarious and gothic story interesting enough to sustain a fast paced and entertaining musical.”

“What makes this adaptation of Heathers work so well is the viciously clever humour, and the peppy songs used to deliver it. The musical manages to walk a tight rope of laugh out loud gags with deeper resonance. It ramps up its satire of clueless, feel-good high school mean girls when the movie was drifting into becoming a psychological drama. Besides the changes in the world since 1988 the show takes an audacious approach and also has much more to poke fun at now. Despite its dark undertones the confrontation and resolution in Heathers the musical are dramatically satisfying."

“Sassy, sexy and oh so smart. Heathers deserves to run with the popular crowd” - Time Out, New York

“Ingenious, naughty and very funny. Heathers still cliques.” - New York Post

“A rowdy, guilty pleasure.” - Ben Brantley, The New York Times
