Opera Australia brings a brilliant production of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro to BREC as part of its 2017 tour of Australia on Thursday 17 August at 7.30pm.
Mozart’s classic comedy has been entertaining crowds for centuries, and between the witty, fast-moving libretto and the melodic, charming ensemble writing, it’s not hard to understand why. The much-loved opera will be performed in English with a live chamber orchestra.
Not only do residents from the south west have the opportunity to attend the opera, but younger locals also have the chance to take to the stage. Opera Australia will continue its community engagement program, providing hundreds of children the opportunity to be trained and perform with the third-busiest opera company in the world through the Regional Children’s Chorus program.
Over the last three years, Opera Australia has had more than 1,000 children involved as part of the Regional Children’s Choruses across Australia, and that number is set to grow even higher this year. Local children will learn to sing songs from The Marriage of Figaro ahead of the opera arriving in town. They’ll then rehearse with the artists, and join them on stage in full costume as part of the performance.
“We’re continuing our successful relationship with the South West Opera Company and have invited their children’s choir to participate in Opera Australia’s initiative. The children involved are incredibly lucky to be able to join such talented performers on stage in a wonderful performance” says Sharon Custers, General Manager at BREC.
Opera Australia’s Artistic Director, Lyndon Terracini, is on a mission to introduce opera to new audiences, and he believes it’s vital to reinvent productions regularly to make them contemporary and engaging for different kinds of settings. Performing in English, engaging local children, and offering the best possible performance value on regional tours helps to broaden the appeal of the opera.
“The Marriage of Figaro is a great opera to tour and with this wonderful Australian creative team this will be a show regional audiences won’t want to miss! We’ve created a version of The Marriage of Figaro that will be unforgettable,” said Mr Terracini.
