2020 NSW Schools Tour — The Barber of Seville (Expired)

Opera Australia welcomes applications from opera singers for its 2020 NSW Schools Tour. The Company primarily tours to Primary Schools, however the great demand for our productions see us regularly performing for community groups and theatres around Sydney and regional NSW.

The 2020 NSW Schools Tour will be a remounted production of The Barber of Seville. A serious case of love at first sight is a big problem for Count Almaviva. Enter the resourceful barber named Figaro, who cleverly solves everyone’s problems - for a price. The performance is 50 minutes long and is sung in English.

Female Swing (Rosina/Bartola/Basilia): Mezzo/Soprano
Count Almaviva: Tenor
Figaro: Baritone
Male Swing (Count/Figaro): Tenor/Baritone

Conditions of employment

The Schools Company conditions include:

  • a maximum 26 weeks of touring, which may include up to 5 weeks of regional touring
  • a maximum of 3 shows per day, up to 12 shows per week
  • the casting of swing and covers so that singers have some cover days
  • the requirement of all company members to bump the set and equipment in and out of each venue
  • the obligation of artists with a valid driver’s licence to share driving company vehicles. It is preferred that singers have a full valid Australian driver’s licence.
  • The requirement that all company members must provide a copy of their legal right to work in Australia (passport or birth certificate)

All conditions are outlined in the Opera Australia Performers and Music Staff Agreement 2017-19 or its successor.

All roles are full time. Experience in opera performance is preferred.

Only applicants with full working rights (Australian/NZ Citizen, Permanent Resident, or equivalent) are eligible to apply for this position.

The contract period for 2020 is from 10 February to 11 September, with possible extension until 18 September.

Audition Information & Requirements

Each audition will run for approximately 5 -10 minutes. An accompanist will be provided by Opera Australia, however you are welcome to provide your own. You will need to bring a copy of your music.

Two arias must be prepared, with at least one in English.

Closing date for applications is Thursday 12 September, unless filled prior.

You will be notified of First-Round Audition times by COB Friday 13 September. Artists required for Call-backs will be notified by COB Wednesday 18 September.
