Transgender, cabaret, and working in retail

Shop assistants and department stores are rich pickings for comedians. Cabaret performer Zeb Direen uses a transgender character to explore dark issues with a comic touch – and a lot of feathers.

How do you thrive in a world defined by the expectations of others? That knotty problem has inspired a Hobart cabaret show: ZEB – A Gender Odyssey, about a retail assistant extraordinaire who is promoted to homewares and becomes a pillow and quilt expert.

Zeb Direen based the show on their own experiences as a non-binary person who has encountered many different experiences while working in retail, in both footwear and manchester departments.
