Inspiration during isolation: The long-term benefits of artist residencies

From playful figures to bathtub performances, artists are using the intense residencies of their past to create unexpected new works in the COVID-19 lockdown.

Given the state of Australian and international border closures over the last year resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the thought of travelling internationally for an artist residency sounds like an otherworldly opportunity. Artists and creatives were stuck within a five km radius for months on end (according to Victorian COVID-19 social distancing guidelines), and catalysts to create were scarce.

Many artists and creatives explored their immediate surroundings and made use of the internet to create and broadcast virtual content. Inspiration arose from the archives, where some artists made use of ideas explored during past artist residencies as forces of creative momentum.
