How to deal with a painfully long awards ceremony? Chop it in two. That’s the solution hit upon by Live Performance Australia (LPA) for this year’s Helpmann Awards, which were presented in two ‘Acts’ over subsequent nights in Sydney.

Act 1, presented on Sunday night, focused on supporting, craft and technical roles in the performing arts, and saw the Sydney Theatre Company (STC) production Muriel’s Wedding the Musical scoop the prize pool, winning five of the 20 awards on offer.
