Why did the musical chicken cross the road?
...to improvise with Ho Hum in a musical improv comedy theatre show on international ‘Tell A Joke Day’! On August 16, Queensland’s premier musical improv troupe, Ho Hum, are coming to Fortitude Valley’s newest hipster event venue to delight audiences for two nights only with completely improvised musicals based on their suggestions.
Ho Hum is the brainchild of songwriter Kath Griffin, who studied improvisation at the highly esteemed iO Theatre in Chicago.
“Improvisational theatre (or improv) is huge around the world and is starting to gain traction in Brisbane,” Ms Griffin said.
“I love Wayne Brady’s musical improv style, and I wanted to create entire comedy musical theatre shows using a similar style; like a funny Broadway musical that is completely improvised.
Audiences are being urged to start thinking of an original show title.
“A few seconds before the show starts, we ask the audience to tell us the name of the show, and we make up a hilarious musical on the spot based on the suggestion.
“Everything you see is made up on the spot — the live music, the songs, the scenes, the jokes, the characters, even the choreography.
“One audience member once yelled out ‘Ask Siri’, so we immediately did a show called ‘Ask Siri — The Musical’.
“Siri was a demanding, bossy diva and Google was played as an alcoholic, and we later uncovered they had a daughter, Cortana — it was hilarious!” Ms Griffin added.
Ho Hum Musical Improv is performing at Concept, 17 McLachlan Street, Fortitude Valley, 4006 on 16 & 17 August at 7.30pm.
