Enter Ophelia

A brave and exciting retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet from a female perspective, Enter Ophelia, comes to Geelong Performing Arts Centre for two performances from May 8-9.

Created by Geelong-based Essential Theatre together with Melbourne’s Three Birds Theatre, the indie theatrical hit brings to life the world of Hamlet in this re-imagined dark comedy.

Essential Theatre is run by a dynamic duo - former drama school buddies Amanda LaBonte and Sophie Lampel - and is best known for its Shakespeare in the Vines tours. The company specialises in re-interpreting the classic texts for modern audiences, and in 2018 joined forces with Three Birds Theatre to create Enter Ophelia.

Following its initial sold-out premiere season at La Mama Theatre in Carlton Melbourne, the production gained widespread acclaim from critics and audiences and is now hitting the road for a regional tour through Victoria and New South Wales.

Enter Ophelia is a female-driven gothic black comedy that re-imagines the world of Hamlet, but this Ophelia is no longer the strange girl who had a thing for flowers. In Shakespeare’s world of mad men and murdering uncles, Ophelia wanders an empty castle, clutching rotting flowers - told what to do, where to stand, what to think. No one really listens to her, no one really sees her. Ophelia must question and navigate the darkest corners and secrets of her world in order to take charge of her own fate.

With direction from critically acclaimed director John Kachoyan, Enter Ophelia promises to be a punchy, dark and thrilling exploration of femininity, isolation and silliness.
