Kate Hood, Raspberry Ripple Artistic Director, plays an array of striking characters, all wheelchair users, all quirky yet familiar. Each of Kate’s characters reveals comic and surreal aspects of life as a wheelchair user.
That’s Why the Lady Needs a Ramp is deeply personal and surprisingly universal, and is the first iteration of a ‘one woman plus show’.
“The ‘plus’ is for honouring Stella Young through comedy, character and coincidence and the parts of the show provoked by Stella’s life, voice, and loss. The ‘plus’ is for the invention and implementation of an onstage ‘buddy’ system. The ‘plus’ is for the embedding of audio-description in both the development and presentation of this work,” says Kate Hood.
The show explores living on wheels in Australia in 2019. Meet Queen Esme of Collingwood, the eternal Aussie optimist who believes she has so much more than others. Share the daily passion of Kerry the coffee addict. Rethink existence with a surprise guest and hear from Kate Hood and her alter-ego as they tackle taboos with hilarious results.
